Robert Perkins Letcher papers, 1844-1853.

This collection consists of the letters of Robert Perkins Letcher as well as his legal documents, a partial treaty, and a receipt. One letter is an invitation from the citizens of Frankfort, Kentucky to a public dinner in Letcher's honor. It is signed by a committee including P. Swigert, Lysander Hord, B.B. Sayre, W.S. Harris, W.W. Bacon and Lewis Sneed. Two letters (one is a holographic copy) dated Jan. 23, 1852 and written by J.P. Benjamin to Letcher discuss politics, elections, and relations with Mexico. Another letter dated June 11, 1853 from General H.L. Scott, Adjutant General of the Army in Mexico, concerns the "late war" (Mexican War). Among other materials in this collection is a copy of a Mexican deed of transfer for land including a mine called El Pedregal owned by Nicolas and Matilde Rappleye. The document is signed by Francisco Villalon, a notary public, Aug. 30, 1851 and verified by George Edward Burr Jan. 14, 1852. Also included are legal documents concerning Letcher's appointment as Minister to Mexico, one signed by Secretary of State John M. Clayton Sept. 19, 1849 and one signed by President Millard Fillmore Aug. 4, 1851. A partial copy of a U.S./Mexico treaty dated June 22, 1850 is also included. Lastly, the undated receipt was issued to Governor R.P. Letcher for rent and board paid to L.S. Hargous.

Robert Perkins Letcher was governor of Kentucky during 1840-1844. After his term ended, Letcher practiced law in Frankfort and remained active in politics. From 1850 to 1852, he served as U.S. minister to Mexico where his proposed treaties sought to protect American interests in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
